The Township of East York was incorporated on January 1st, 1924. East York is covers a very large area and its boundaries are roughly Danforth Avenue to the south, Bayview Avenue to the west, Victoria Park Avenue to the east and Eglinton Avenue to the north. Nearby neighbourhoods include Riverdale and Danforth Village, both located to the south of East York. Until amalgamation with The City of Toronto in 1998, East York held the distinction of being Canada`s only semi-autonomous borough. This long standing independence is a testament to the pride that residents have had in their Toronto neighbourhood throughout its history.

Since East York is fairly large geographically, it has many neighbourhoods within the neighbourhood such as Leaside, Thorncliffe Park, Parkview Hills, Flemingdon Park, Woodbine Heights, Woodbine Gardens and Crescent Town – each having their own distinct look, feel and identity. For the longest time, East York had the city’s largest percentage of senior citizens as residents, as such, it became quite commonplace for empty nesters to look to East York for real estate. In recent years the demographics have shifted as young families have come to see value in the affordability of East York real estate, because in East York there one has all the amenities imaginable, while still living in close proximity to the city centre.

In East York real estate we find a wide variety of housing types and architectural design, simply because the majority of development took place over a 70 year span from the 1890s to the 1960s. No one style dominates the area, you can find everything from small bungalows, to 2 storey semi-detached, to grand mansions to high rise apartment buildings. East York is also one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in Toronto, with almost half of its population claiming a first language other than English or French. Approximately 105,000 people call East York home, the median household income would be slightly above that of The City of Toronto and the average price of East York homes for sale is approximately $375,000.
